In attempts to clamp down crime in the district, the Minister of Police, Mr. Senzo Mchunu held a Ministerial stakeholder engagement session at the O. R. Tambo Hall in the O. R. Tambo District with the theme : ENHANCING PARTNERSHIP WITH CITIZENS FOR SAFER COMMUNITIES.
In attendance was the Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, MEC Xolile Nqaba, O. R. Tambo Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mesuli Ngqondwana.
Responding to issues raised by stakeholders in attendance, the Premier applauded the police for good work they are doing. He further stated that the province is under resourced and the police cannot manage crime without resources.
He also called on Mayors to lead operations in hot-spot areas. He further said the Tactical Response Team must be deployed in the O.R.Tambo District.
The Minister of Police ,Minister Senzo Mchunu in his key note address appreciated everyone in attendance and promised the following:
●To deploy more police
●Bring the Tactical Response Team (TRT)
●Bring back the National Intelligence Unit (NIU)
●Meeting with the police to provide strategies on how to provide law and order
●Battle lines are drawn with criminals
The Minister pleaded with the stakeholders to support the police when doing their work.
“When the police have started doing their work people must understand that police are trained to fight crime and not massage it.”
He emphasised that those who are to playing with police, that time is over now.
